Shortbio

Dr. Wesley K. G. Assunção is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on software engineering, with an emphasis on software maintenance and evolution. He has an extensive publication record with students, international collaborators, and industry partners. His work has appeared in leading software engineering conferences and journals, reflecting both theoretical contributions and practical impact. Prior to joining NC State, Dr. Assunção held academic positions in Brazil and Europe. He was a University Assistant at Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria) and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Earlier in his career, he served as an Assistant/Associate Professor at the Federal University of Technology – Paraná (Brazil) from 2013 to 2020. He earned both his MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the Federal University of Paraná (Brazil). Beyond his research and teaching, Dr. Assunção regularly serves as a reviewer for conferences and journals and has contributed to the organization of conferences, symposia, workshops, competitions, and academic meetings. Currently, Dr. Assunção is co-editor of the In Practice track at the Journal of Systems and Software.

  • Variability Management: variability mechanisms, software customization, and software reuse (SPLs/HCSs)
  • Software Quality: technical debt, code smells, and software refactoring
  • Model-Driven Engineering: model inconsistency detection, repair generation, and change propagation
  • Collaboration in Systems Engineering: change synchronization, tool flexibility, and conflict awareness
  • Software Testing: regression testing, integration testing, and test case selection/prioritization
  • AI4SE: Generative AI, Machine Learning, and Evolutionary Algorithms for Software Engineering
